Natural Channel Design Techniques
Using a Natural Channel Design approach will serve Buffalo Bayou well by creating a self-sustaining bayou that will slow destructive erosion processes. These Natural Channel Design techniques include the implementation of toe wood, bioengineered slope restoration, pool and riffle systems, and bankfull benches to serve as a “riparian sponge” for stormwater. The project area will be replanted with native trees and other vegetation to restore native habitat and help further minimize erosion along the bayou.
Before and After
The photos below are from a similar project completed along McCoury Creek in Georgia in 2010. The “After” photo was taken 2 years after the completed project that utilized Natural Channel Design to repair and help minimize future erosion.
